Concrete that was poured once
Board-formed concrete cannot be corrected. That is the whole argument for it, and the reason so little of it is any good.
A board-formed wall records its own making. The grain of the shuttering, the order the boards went up, the day the pour paused — all of it stays visible for the life of the building. There is no sanding it back and no second attempt.
That irreversibility is why the good examples are so much better than the average ones. An architect who specifies it is accepting that a bad Tuesday will be in the building forever, and the ones who accept that tend to have earned the confidence.
When we see it done well, we photograph it in raking light and let the wall make the argument. When we see it done badly, we say so in the document.
