What the fog does to a plan
On this coast the light is missing until eleven for half the year. The houses that ignore that are the ones that sit unsold.
From September the fog holds on the headlands until mid-morning, and it flattens everything. Rooms that depend on a low sun to make sense are simply grey for four hours a day, six months a year.
The architects who have worked here longest design for the fog rather than around it: pale ceilings that lift what light there is, one warm material at eye level, and glazing placed for the sky rather than the view.
It is the clearest example we have of why regional knowledge is not decoration. A plan that works beautifully forty miles inland can be the wrong plan on the point.
