Sable Strand

The strand is protected the whole way along, so the houses sit behind the ridge rather than on it and you reach the water on foot through cut paths in the marram grass. From the beach you cannot see a single roof.

It is the only stretch of this coast where the sand is dark enough to hold the evening light, which is the reason three of the region’s best-known houses are here.
