Quarry House
Cut into the hillside, with the whole city laid out below it.
The house
Wray cut the house into a steep hillside plot nobody else would touch, stepping it down the slope on stone terraces so that every principal room looks out over the city. The pool is cantilevered past the retaining wall and appears, from inside, to end in mid air above the lights.
The stone was quarried three miles away and dressed on site. Its mass holds temperature so steadily that the heating rarely runs between April and October, which on a west facing slope is not a small thing.
